Facial Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Skin cancer is becoming a rising concern with over one million cases diagnosed each year. While some cases of skin cancer can be treated with freezing, lasers or other less invasive procedures—there are others which require surgical excision. The surgical removal of skin cancer on the face requires a specialist to ensure adequate treatment of the cancer while being mindful of aesthetics. Dr. James Chan and Dr. Haena Kim can remove the cancer and preserve as much unaffected skin tissue as possible.

What Are My Options for Facial Skin Cancer Reconstruction?

Once the cancer removal is complete, most patients are left with an unsightly open wound. There are two main options for reconstructive surgery at this point. Each of these procedures can be performed the same day as your cancer surgery, or a week later—depending on your schedule and needs.

Flap: Rotation of skin flaps are often used for facial skin cancer reconstruction. Dr. Chan or Dr. Kim will move tissue from a site adjacent to the wound, and reconstruct the excised area of your face. The results are functional and match your surrounding skin.

Skin Graft: The skin graft procedure involves the removal of a layer of skin from one area (such as behind the ear or lower neck), and placing it over the area of concern. This skin serves as a barrier while your underlying tissue can grow.

To discuss which option is right for your skin concerns, contact Dr. Chan or Dr. Kim today to request a consultation in Portland.

How Much Does Facial Skin Cancer Reconstruction Cost?

The cost for facial skin cancer reconstruction can be discussed at your initial consultation. In most cases, your insurance company will cover the cost of your facial reconstruction.
