How Is Earlobe Repair Performed?

Depending on your needs, there are a few different types of procedures Dr. Chan or Dr. Kim can perform. At your initial consultation, we can discuss which procedure is right for you. One example of a procedure is the flap technique which can help minimize scarring. The technique also depends on whether the tear is through the lobe, or if the rim of the lobe is spared.

Mending torn earlobes is possible with surgery. It is done under a local anesthetic. The surgeon excises the tear and then repairs the lobe with a line of straight sutures on the front and back. Earlobe repair surgery can also fix enlarged and stretched lobes for a normal look. This surgery can successfully correct any type of tear in the lobe.

Patients should be able to get their ears re-pierced after surgery; be sure to discuss this with your surgeon.

During your consultation, Dr. Chan or Dr. Kim will discuss your complete medical history and may ask about how the damage occurred. You will have to stop taking blood thinners and other medications for at least 2 weeks before the surgery.

What To Expect During Surgery

Once you reach the hospital or clinic, the area to be repaired will be cleaned and prepped. The lobe is injected with a local anesthetic so you do not feel any pain. Your surgeon will decide whether to excise part of the lobe or stitch it up based on the lobe’s condition. The goal of this surgery is to make the ear look normal again, so extreme precision is necessary to ensure natural-looking results.

Post-Surgery Recovery

On average, recovery from this procedure takes about 10 days. The results provided are permanent. Expect a bit of soreness and swelling immediately after the surgery. Following the doctor’s instructions will ensure proper healing with little scarring. Make sure to follow up with the surgeon so that you know when you can pierce your ears again.
