Dr. Chan and his staff offer dermabrasion for patients in Vancouver, Portland and surrounding areas of Washington and Oregon.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermabrasion?
Before dermabrasion, speak with our staff to make sure this is the procedure to give you the results you are looking for. Dermabrasion is great for certain scars and wrinkles and requires very specific technical expertise. There are a few factors to take into consideration before considering dermabrasion:
- The darker the skin type, the higher the risk for pigmentation complications
- If you get cold sores or fever blisters, treatment may cause a flare up
- You may not be a candidate if you are in active stages of acne
How is Dermabrasion Performed?
Depending on your personal needs, we may use a local anesthesia, mild sedative or a numbing spray for your dermabrasion treatment. Depending on how large the area to be treated is, treatment may last only a few minutes or up to an hour.
Dr. Chan will begin by scraping away the outermost layer of the skin with a wire brush attached to a motorized handle. Afterwards, he will apply a wet dressing to moisturize the treated skin.
What Can I Expect After Dermabrasion?
Following dermabrasion, your skin will be red and you may experience pain, swelling, burning or aching. You will notice scabs/crusts forming over your skin—this will flake away to reveal your new skin over the course of several days. To ensure proper healing, be sure to carefully follow the instructions Dr. Chan gives you.
Most patients return to work after a week or two, and active sports should be avoided for about 3 weeks. Be sure to protect your skin from the sun until you are completely healed—up to 6 months.
